Quick Diagnosis

Most mod issues fall into these categories:

  • Not showing in car list: Incorrect folder structure or file format
  • Missing preview image: No showroom image generated or missing preview.jpg
  • Can't select car/track: Corrupted data files or missing dependencies
  • Crashes when loading: Physics errors, bad textures, or CSP requirement
  • Works but looks wrong: Missing textures, wrong CSP version, or shader issues

Car Mods Not Showing Up

Problem: Installed car mod but it doesn't appear in Content Manager or AC launcher

Wrong Folder Structure

The Issue: The most common problem. Car folder needs to be in the right place with the correct structure.

Correct Structure:

📁 steamapps/common/assettocorsa/
📁 content/
📁 cars/
📁 car_name/ ← Car folder goes HERE
📄 data.acd
📄 ui_car.json
📁 skins/
📁 sfx/

Common Mistakes:

  • ❌ Putting the car in Documents\Assetto Corsa (WRONG location)
  • ❌ Double-nested folders: cars/car_name/car_name/data.acd
  • ❌ Entire download archive in cars folder (must extract first)
  • ❌ Spelled folder name wrong or has special characters

Easy Fix: In Content Manager, go to Content → Cars → click "Install" and drag the .zip file. CM automatically puts it in the right place.

Missing or Corrupted data.acd File

The Issue: The data.acd file contains all physics data. Without it, AC can't load the car.

Solution:

  1. 1. Open the car folder: assettocorsa/content/cars/[car_name]/
  2. 2. Look for data.acd file (should be 100KB-2MB)
  3. 3. If missing: Redownload the mod—it's incomplete
  4. 4. If present but car still won't show: File is corrupted, redownload from source
  5. 5. Some mods have unpacked data/ folder instead of .acd—this is fine

Invalid or Missing ui_car.json

The Issue: This file tells AC the car's name, brand, description. Corrupted JSON = invisible car.

Solution:

  1. 1. Navigate to car folder
  2. 2. Open ui_car.json with Notepad
  3. 3. Check for errors:
    • • Missing closing brackets } or braces ]
    • • Extra commas at end of lines
    • • Special characters breaking syntax
  4. 4. Use JSONLint.com to validate the file
  5. 5. If broken beyond repair, redownload mod

Encrypted/Partial Download

The Issue: Some paid mods are encrypted and need specific files. Partial downloads break this.

Solution:

  1. 1. Check file size—compare download to advertised size
  2. 2. Redownload with stable internet connection
  3. 3. For paid mods (RSS, URD), make sure you have the license file installed
  4. 4. Don't pirate—cracked mods often don't work correctly

Track Mods Not Appearing

Problem: Track mod installed but can't find it in track list

Wrong Track Folder Location

Correct Structure:

📁 steamapps/common/assettocorsa/
📁 content/
📁 tracks/
📁 track_name/ ← Track folder HERE
📄 models.ini
📄 surfaces.ini
📁 data/
📁 ui/

Multi-Layout Tracks: Some tracks have multiple layouts (e.g., Spa has GP and Endurance). These have sub-folders inside the main track folder.

Missing models.ini or surfaces.ini

The Issue: These files define track 3D models and surface grip. Without them, track won't load.

Solution: Redownload the track—these are essential files that should always be included.

Track Requires Custom Shaders Patch

The Issue: Many modern tracks REQUIRE CSP to function. Without it, they won't appear or will crash.

Check for CSP requirement:

  1. 1. Look at the mod's download page for "Requires CSP"
  2. 2. Check for ext_config.ini file in track folder (CSP indicator)
  3. 3. Install latest CSP if you don't have it
Install CSP →

Mod Loads But Has Issues

Missing Textures / Purple/Black Surfaces

Symptom: Car or track loads but surfaces are bright purple, black, or invisible.

Causes & Fixes:

Missing DDS Texture Files

Check the skins/ folder (cars) or texture/ folder (tracks). If .dds files are missing, redownload.

CSP Version Too Old

Some mods need CSP 0.1.80+ or newer. Update CSP to latest version.

Graphics Settings Too Low

In AC Video Settings, increase "Anisotropic Filtering" to 16x. Also enable "World Detail" to High.

Car Physics Feel Wrong / Instant Spin

Symptom: Car handles unrealistically, spins at slightest input, or feels glued to the road unnaturally.

Likely Causes:

  • Bad physics mod: Not all mod creators understand physics. Poorly made mod = terrible handling.
  • Traction Control enabled for drift car: Turn OFF TC/ABS for drift mods.
  • Wrong tire compound selected: Some cars have "drift" tires—select them in setup.
  • Setup not loaded: Load the "default" setup in Setup menu before driving.
  • CSP interference: Disable "Physics Tweak Pack" in CSP settings if enabled.

Reality check: Some mods just have awful physics. If handling feels broken, try a different version or mod from a reputable creator.

No Engine Sound or Wrong Sounds

Problem: Car drives silently or sounds like a different car.

Solutions:

  1. 1. Check if sfx/ folder exists in the car folder
  2. 2. If missing, mod creator didn't include sounds—find a sound mod for it
  3. 3. Check sfx/Guid (something).bank files are present
  4. 4. In Content Manager, right-click car → "Replace sound" → choose from library
  5. 5. Download Fonsecker Sound Pack for generic good sounds

Missing Preview Image / Showroom

Problem: Car shows blank square or generic image in car selection.

Fix:

  1. 1. In Content Manager, right-click the car
  2. 2. Select "Update Preview Image"
  3. 3. CM will load the car in showroom and capture a new image
  4. 4. Alternatively: Place a JPG file named preview.jpg in car folder

Content Manager Specific Issues

CM Says "Content Not Found" but Files Exist

Fix: CM cache is outdated. Go to Settings → Content Manager → "Rescan" button. CM will reindex all content.

"Failed to enable Custom Shaders Patch"

Cause: CSP installation corrupted or antivirus blocking DLL files.

Fix: In CM → Settings → Custom Shaders Patch → "Remove" then reinstall latest version. Add AC folder to antivirus exclusions.

Mods Install But Don't Show in Vanilla Launcher

This is normal. Some mods with custom properties only show in Content Manager. CM is far superior anyway—don't use vanilla launcher.

Can't Drag and Drop Mods into CM

Fix: Run Content Manager as Administrator. Right-click CM shortcut → Properties → Compatibility → "Run as administrator."

Skin Mods Not Showing

Skin folder structure:

📁 content/cars/[car_name]/
📁 skins/
📁 skin_name/ ← Each skin is a folder
📄 livery.png (or .dds)
📄 ui_skin.json
📄 preview.jpg

Common Problems:

  • • Skin placed in wrong car's folder (check car name matches)
  • • Missing ui_skin.json file
  • • Skin files loose in skins/ folder (must be in subfolder)
  • • Double-nested: skins/skin_name/skin_name/livery.png (remove extra folder)

Prevention & Best Practices

Avoid Problems Before They Start

  • Always use Content Manager for installation - Drag and drop, it handles structure automatically
  • Download from trusted sources - AC Supply, RaceDepartment, official Patreons only
  • Read the mod description - Check for CSP requirements, dependencies, known issues
  • Test mods individually - Install one → test → then install next
  • Keep CSP updated - Many new mods require latest CSP builds
  • Don't rename mod folders randomly - Internal files reference folder names
  • Backup before mass installs - Copy Documents\Assetto Corsa before adding 50 mods
  • Use CM's built-in tools - "Replace Sound," "Generate Preview," "Update Data" features
