Track Installation Issues

Downloaded a track mod but can't find it in your track list? This guide covers the most common causes and quick fixes.

Quick Fixes to Try First

  1. ✅ Restart Assetto Corsa completely (not just return to menu)
  2. ✅ Check the track is in: assettocorsa/content/tracks/
  3. ✅ Look for the specific layout in track selection (some tracks have multiple configs)
  4. ✅ Verify ui_track.json exists in the track folder

Issue #1: Wrong Folder Structure

The Problem

Track folders must be placed directly in the tracks/ directory, not nested inside other folders.

Correct Structure

📁 assettocorsa/
  📁 content/
    📁 tracks/
      📁 nurburgring/ ← Track folder here
        📄 ui_track.json
        📁 ui/
        📁 data/
        📁 ai/

Wrong Structure

📁 assettocorsa/
  📁 content/
    📁 tracks/
      📁 Nurburgring_Pack_v2/ ← Extra folder!
        📁 content/ ← Extra folder!
          📁 tracks/ ← Extra folder!
            📁 nurburgring/ ← Track buried too deep
              📄 ui_track.json

The Fix

  1. Navigate to assettocorsa/content/tracks/
  2. Find the actual track folder (contains ui_track.json)
  3. Cut the track folder
  4. Paste it directly into tracks/
  5. Delete empty parent folders

Issue #2: Track Layouts (Configurations)

The Problem

Many tracks have multiple layouts (GP, Short, Drift, etc.). Each layout is in a subfolder. You need to select the specific layout in-game.

Track with Multiple Layouts

📁 nurburgring/
  📁 gp/ ← Layout 1
    📄 ui_track.json
    📁 data/
  📁 nordschleife/ ← Layout 2
    📄 ui_track.json
    📁 data/
  📁 touristenfahrten/ ← Layout 3
    📄 ui_track.json
    📁 data/

How to Find Layouts

  1. In track selection, click on the track name
  2. A dropdown appears showing all available layouts
  3. Look for layout names like "GP", "Short", "Drift", "Endurance"
  4. Some tracks show as separate entries instead of dropdowns

Issue #3: Missing CSP (Custom Shaders Patch)

The Problem

Modern track mods often require Custom Shaders Patch for advanced features like dynamic lighting, rain, working animated objects, and better graphics.

How to Identify

Signs a track needs CSP:

  • Track doesn't appear at all
  • AC crashes when loading the track
  • Track description mentions "CSP required"
  • Track has features like "animated pit crew" or "rain"

The Fix

  1. Install Custom Shaders Patch - Follow our CSP guide
  2. Make sure CSP is enabled in Content Manager
  3. Update CSP to the latest version
  4. Restart AC and try loading the track

Issue #4: Missing or Corrupted Files

The Problem

Incomplete downloads or corrupted files prevent the track from loading properly.

Required Track Files

📁 track_folder/
  📁 layout_folder/ ← At least one layout
    📄 ui_track.json ← Required
    📁 data/ ← Required (surfaces.ini, etc.)
      📄 surfaces.ini
    📁 ai/ ← Required for AI racing
      📄 fast_lane.ai
    📁 ui/ ← Optional (preview images)
      📄 preview.png
      📄 outline.png

How to Fix

  1. Verify all required folders exist
  2. Check surfaces.ini exists in data folder
  3. If files are missing, re-download the track
  4. Download from trusted sources like AC Supply
  5. Check the download wasn't corrupted (compare file sizes)

Issue #5: Invalid Track Name

The Problem

Track folder names with spaces, special characters, or uppercase letters can cause issues.

Bad Folder Names

  • Nurburgring GP - Contains space
  • spa-francorchamps (2024) - Contains parentheses
  • Tokyo_Highway! - Contains exclamation

Good Folder Names

  • nurburgring_gp
  • spa_2024
  • tokyo_highway

The Fix

  1. Close Assetto Corsa
  2. Rename track folder to use:
    • Lowercase letters only
    • Numbers
    • Underscores (not spaces)
  3. Launch AC

Advanced Troubleshooting

Check AC Log Files

  1. Go to assettocorsa/logs/
  2. Open log.txt
  3. Search for the track name
  4. Look for errors like:
    • "surfaces.ini not found"
    • "Invalid track configuration"
    • "CSP extension required"

Content Manager Cache Rebuild

If using Content Manager:

  1. Open Content Manager
  2. Go to Content → Tracks
  3. Click Refresh button
  4. Settings → Content Manager → Content
  5. Click Rebuild Cache
  6. Restart CM

Test in Vanilla AC

If track shows in vanilla AC but not Content Manager, it's a CM cache issue. If it doesn't show in vanilla AC, the track installation itself is wrong.

Still Having Issues?

If none of these solutions work:

  • Re-download the track from a different source
  • Try installing a different track to verify your process
  • Verify AC game files integrity in Steam
  • Ask for help on Discord
  • Include folder structure screenshots when asking for help
